Collage-Constructing Tutorial

This tutorial is for the 3D Magazine Collage design assignment in the DS106 Assignment Bank. This tutorial only shows the steps I took when making the sculpture

What You Need:
-magazines/newspapers, preferably about something that interests you
-scissors
-glue/Mod Podge (tape, if needed)
-something to use as a base for your sculpture ex: paper mache, construction paper, etc.)

Steps:
First, you will need to create the base of your sculpture. With mine, I first decided what shape I wanted the sculpture to be, a K for my name, cut out the pieces from construction paper, glued the pieces together and let it dry.
While the sculpture is drying, start flipping through your magazines and other papers and cut out images, words, and articles that go with your theme. Make sure that you have enough to cover the entire sculpture.
Next, use an adhesive like Mod Podge to start collaging your pieces onto the sculpture base. After all of the pieces are glued on, let the sculpture sit to dry.
Finally, upload a photo of your sculpture and a description of why you made it onto your blog post and tag it to the 3D Magazine Collage assignment.
Now you’re finished with the assignment and have a nice piece of art!

Ideas and Collages

In this post, I’ve included the assignment descriptions for two assignments that I have created on the DS106 Assignment Bank website. Both ended up being design assignments, mostly because those have been my favorite assignments to work on.

3D Magazine Collage

Take some of your old magazines and newspapers and create a 2D or 3D collage/sculpture of words and pictures that represent a common theme (ex: color, media subject such as animals or food, things you like, etc.). Explain why you chose your theme and what some of the individual pieces mean to you.
(I want to go back and edit this so someone could only make a 3D sculpture for the assignment, but I think once the assignment is submitted, it can only be edited by faculty.)

What are you selling?

Is there something that you wish existed in the world, but so far it’s only an idea in our head? For this assignment, create a poster advertising a fictional product designed by you. Create the poster by using an editing program like Photoshop or drawing the design and creating a tangible poster. Try answering questions like who the product is for and how will it benefit the person who buys it, in your design.

Inspired by: Lauren Falkenstein

Lauren’s noir Valentine inspires me because it makes me smile every time I look at it because I watched Double Indemnity for ds106 and shortly afterwards I saw this and laughed because it makes a great Valentine’s Day card. The creative use of the quotes and the pink coloration of the text to match the traditional colors of Valentine’s Day all went into the creation of this work. The cleverness of using this scene from the movie as a Valentine card has inspired me to look in more obscure places more inspiration when completing assignments.
